Kern The Bay Batters season began against Grace Christ Fellowship Church - a team that consistently plays good ball. The Bay Batters responded by playing competitive softball - coming from behind in the first game with 3 runs in the bottom of the 6th and then holding the opponents scoreless in the top of the 7th for an 8-6 victory. In the second game, the team got behind only to score 8 runs in the last inning to lose 17-15. The defense played well with some let downs that go with opening day and little practice. Joe Alba was at his midseason form at short. The offense was balanced as runs were scored from the top to the bottom of the batting order. Jason Pokey hit his home run (another was caught in right field, over path next to fence) with 2 men on while Matt Pokey and Frank Kotecki lead the hitting with 4/5 (each with a walk). Joe Alba was 5/7 (including a triple), John Hoylman and Alex were 3/5 (each with a walk), while Scott Mason (a triple) and Dave Armstrong were at 500. It was a good start to the season

Estabrook It was a bit of a make shift team that the Bay Batters fielded against a good hitting Faith Bible Team. The first game started with an uphill challenge but the team came back only to lose 16-14. The second game went into the bottom of the last inning tied when Faith Bible scored their winning run. The defense played better as we went along and adjusted. The outfield spent the nite chasing/catching long fly balls. Scott Mason lead the offense with 7/7 (a walk) and 6 runs scored - followed closely behind by Joe Alba with 6/7 (a walk) and 6 runs scored. Jason Pokey (5/7) had another home run driving in 3 runs in the bottom of the first inning/first game which sparked the come back. Alex Grzybowski and Marti Wolniakowski had key hits (each 4/6) while Frank Kotecki and John Hoylman had 500 nites. This was the second of 3 consecutive nites against the better 3 team in the league - and the team looks competitive.

Kern The Bay Batters went up against a perennially good New Hope 1 team and found they are still playing good softball. The offense and defense were not up to earlier game levels as the hit production was half of past games while the defense played well at times and then had lapses. Scott Mason and Jason Pokey made fine catches in the outfield while Scott Bussen, Joe Alba (relay) and Alex Grzbowski (tag) combined to make the out at the plate on an outstanding play. The offense had two big innings (one per game) led by Rick Wolniakowski with 4/5 (2 runs, 1 walk) and Joe Alba 4/6 (2 runs). Scott Bussen and Alex Grzbowski hit for 500. A bright spot was Chris Schmid who is new to the team and went 2/2 in the second game.

The Bay Batters responded to the fan support from the church with renewed hitting and good defense to win both games against the South Side Church. Perhaps the week off helped, but the team was hitting line drives as in the past. Joe Alba was outstanding in the field and at the plate with 7 for 7 including a HR plus 6 runs scored. The offense results were exceptional: Scott Mason - 5 for 8 w/ 4 runs and a triple, Rick - 4 for 6 w/ 4 runs, Fran Kotecki - 4 for 7 w/ 4 runs a HR and a triple, Mike - 3 for 5, John Hoylman - 3 for 6 w/ 3 runs , Bob Peschel - 3 for 6 w/ 3 runs , Marti - 2 for 4 w/ 4 walks in the first game, and Alex - 3 for 7. The defense excelled giving up only one run in the first game. The Wolniakowski brothers executed an unassisted double play - Marti at first to Rick at second to Marti at first. It was good to have Bob Kriefall back

Kern The hitting continued from last week - and along with good defense , the Bay Batters were able to extend their winning streak to 4 games against Crossroads. Frank Kotecki with 6 for 7 (2 HRs and 2 triples), Jason Pokey with 4 for 4 (a HR and 4 runs scored) and Bob Peschel with 5 for 6 ( 4 runs scored ) lead the way. New team members Ryan Hall (5 for 7) and Eric Hall (4 for 6) were welcome additions to the offense and defense - while the Wolniakowski brothers each had 4 for 6 - Marti scoring 5 runs and Rick turning 2 double plays in the field. The defense played well with Dave Bolyard returning to play first base, Alex Grzybowski policing left field - all in support of the strong pitching of Bob Peschel.

West Milwaukee 3 The Bay Batters were able to get in the first game against Christian Life Center with Jason Pokey coming within one inning of pitching a shut out ( 13-2). The second game is said to be in a "raid delay" with 3 complete innings played. The bottom 5 spots in the batting order lead the offense for the evening - going 12 for 14 ( Eric Hall 3/4, Chris Schmid 3/4, Jim Lathrop and Frank Kotecki 4/4, John Hoylman 1/1 and Bob Peschell 1/1). Joe Alba and Matt Pokey also had outstanding nites at the plate. The defense continued to play good consistent ball with Joe Alba playing well at short and Alex Grzybowski covering left field well. The evening ended with a cloud burst and the team running for their cars.

Estabrook The bats came alive in the second game against Calvary Bible with 25 hits after passing up a chance to win the first game with men on first and third and no outs - in what would have been the final inning. Calvary scored 5 runs in the top of the last inning - but the Bay Batters came back with 3 runs and had the bases loaded (thanks to 5 walks) in the bottom of that inning when the last out was made. All in all, the Bay Batter patience showed for 17 walks in the first game . The defense played well with John Hoylman turning a key double play at third and Rick turning an unassisted double play at second. Alex and Scott Mason made outstanding catches in the outfield. The Pokey boys lead the offense - Matt with 6/8 including a triple (he really can run when he has a extra base hit) and Jason with 4/6, 6 runs scored and a HR. Dave Armstrong was back with 5/8, Marti had 3/5 - while Joe Alba (5 runs) , Scott Mason (4 runs) and Frank Kotecki (HR) each had 4/7. It was a good nite for the Bay Batters.

Harvest Community has been a challenge for the Bay Batters in the past, but the tide turned with wins of 29-5 and 18 - 11. Bob Peschell pitched an impressive first game and yielded to Matt Pokey for his second start of the season in the second game. Matt went the distance. Both pitchers had a good defense with Alex, Eric, Mike and Marti making fine catches in the outfield. Chris made the final out by crossing in front of Eric to make the catch. The offense benefitted from 13 walks (25 hits) in the first game and 12 walks (16 hits) in the second game. The plan is to keep that offense on a roll. Jason Pokey (playing a good third base) lead the offense with 5/5 , 9 runs and a HR. With one exception, every player hit 500 or above with Dave Armstrong and Joe Alba having 6/8 with 7 and 6 runs respectively.

West Milwaukee 3 The Bay Batters had good competition from Woodridge before winning both games. The return of Scott Bussen at third base was instrumental in the successes - Scott having 3/4 ( a double and a triple plus 4 runs) at the plate plus fine fielding which included starting one double play. Walks aided the wins (15 and 10 for the evening) with Alex (5/7 - a triple and 4 runs) and Joe (4/7 - a HR and a triple) leading the offense. Chris Schmid was the most patient with 6 walks. In the field, Rick turned 2 double plays and Joe was outstanding at short. The outfield handled most of the fly balls except the several home runs that were each hit far down the same left field corridor. Now it is on to the playoffs.

The defense was outstanding last Monday as we split with Grace Christian Fellowship. Alex made a spectacular catch while Matt, Mike and Jason played solid outfield. The infield played well with Rick almost completing an out on his back. Bob Peschell pitched 2 good games and lead the offense with 5/7. Jason (5/8 - HR) and Matt (3/5 - 3 walks) followed with Dave Armstrong, Rick and Chris hitting 500.

McCarty #1

The double elimination tournament began against Calvary Bible (3rd place) with the Bay Batters finishing in 6th place. The score was 13- 12 going into the top of the last inning when the Bay Batters loaded the bases with one out. An unfortunate noncall of "infield fly" resulted in the last two outs and the game. The second game against Crossroads went into the nite with a 13-12 win. The last 3 outs were made in the dark as Rick made a great play on a grounder (and Dave Armstrong was able to see the throw to first), Mike made a catch in left and Joe used his body from top to bottom to stop a ground ball and tag second for the force out. There was some hair-raising base running that worked, Rick (3/4 - 3 walks) and Chris (4/6) lead the hitting – plus much clutch hitting and patience for walks - especially in the 7 run 3rd inning of the second game, Joe and Scott's bats came alive, Jason hit the long ball and we were reminded that Matt really can run (HR) when the ball gets beyond the outfielders. On the defense, Marti made an outstanding play at third as did Eric in the outfield and Jason did a great job filling the pitching slot. All that means - on to the second nite of the tournament.

The Bay Batters played very well in the tournament with a fourth place finish by winning 2 games by one run and losing 2 games by one run. The team came a long way from the beginning of the year with a 1 and 7 start - 3 of the teams in the tournament being much more of a challenge earlier in the year. Two runs in the top of the last inning (4 walks and a single) of the first game with Grace Christian Fellowship gave the Bay Batters a 2 run lead - which Bob Peschell was able to turn into a one run win by his fine pitching. Patience was important for the win as 6 of the 10 runs came by way of players who walked (a total of 13 walks) and scored. The offense was led by Joe (2/3) plus Jason (HR), Dave Armstrong, Rick and John who all hit 500 - Matt didn't hit because of 4 walks. Eric and Joe lead the defense. In the second game against Brookside Baptist, the Bay Batters held the lead until the 5th inning and lost in the last half of the last inning. The base running didn't work. Leading hitters: Matt (2/2), Joe (3/4), Jason (2/3), Rick (2/3), Bob (2/3) and Marti (2/4). The defense played very well allowing just 6 runs. Now it is wait until next year - remembering a 6th place finish and the best result for the team in a tournament. It was a good year.
