The Bay Batters required time to warm up (as the temperature went down to 29F wind chill) with a solid win after losing in the first game with Eastbrook. There were signs of life in the last inning of the first game with 2 home runs - just not enough. A suggeted revamp of the line up contributed to the seond game success. The offense was lead by Joe Alda - recruited by the Reeves family - who was 5/5 and 5 runs scored. Scott Mason (3/4) and Jason Pokey (4/5) each had 2 home runs - one in each game. Above 600 hitters were Jeff Sapp in the lead off role, Rick Wolniakowski and the Dave-Dave combination (Dave Armstrong and Dave Bolyard). On defense, the very cold weather took its toll - although the fielding improved as the evening went on. In any event, it was good to have the season underway.

Estabrook

The Bay Batters second game ended with a play that is seldom seen in baseball (never seen by anyone on the field). Scott Mason moved quickly enough to his left for a fly ball in left field so that he was able to redirect the ball off the finders of his glove to Jeff Sapp who was moving to his right for the catch. We had no camera - so you will have to believe us. The games were one sided as tthe Bay batters won 27-3 and 21-0 against Grace Christ Fellowship Church 2. Errors figured in a higher OBP than the BA - but the hitting was impressive led by 5 Home Runs - 3 by Jason Pokey and one each by Joe Alda and Scott Mason. Those same three players lead the hitting along with Scott Busen, Rick Woiniakowski, and Bob Peschel - the pitcher. The evening provided the opportunity to move players to different positions with good results (for future reference) which included creating a bull pen given that starter Bob Peschel will be on the "travel list" for the next two weeks.

Lincoln 3 The Bay Batters played 2 games well against a good, young New Hope 1 team - losing 15-7 and 9-3. The scores do not reflect the closeness of the games as the scores before the last inning of each game were 8-5 and 5-3. We went to the bull pen for Jason Pokey who pitched the first game and Dave Armstrong the second game - each of whom did an exceptional job. The difference in the game was the New Hope outfield who made one outstanding catch after another on balls that were very well hit. On another nite the outs will travel the extra inches to fall out of reach for hits. Scott Mason let the offense with a perfect nite including 2 walks while Dave Armstrong and Joe Alda had 3/5 . The defense played well with the outfield catching the balls they could get to and the infield making the plays for outs. So we can now move on to next Monday evening.

Lincoln 4 Once again, the the play of the Bay Batters improved as the temperature became colder. In the first game, the score was 6-1 going into the last of the seventh inning when the rally fell one run short. That hitting continued in the second game with hits and 4 runs by the first 4 batters (HRs by Scott Mason and Jason Pokey). Both games were well played with outstanding outfield play including exceptional catches by Jason Pokey, Scott Mason and Scott Bussen plus Jeff Sapp's throw from right field to cut down the runner at third. Other notable plays by Joe Alda at short behind and John Hoylman - who later made a nice 2 step play to first for the last out og the game. The Pokeys led the offense (both with one walk and Matt hitting his HR in the second game). Rick was right there with 3/3 in the second game. Dave Armstrong and John Hoylman (2 walks) hit 500. The pitching was shared by Jason Pokey and Dave Armstrong. Alex Grzybowski - a Nicolet student - joined us and played 2 good games.

McCarty 1 The defense shown as the Bay Batters gave up a total of 5 runs in the first 2 innings of the first game with Calvary Bible Church - and then allowed only one run the rest of the night. The starting pitchers Bob Peschel and Dave Armstrong were outstanding. Of the many fine plays, Scott Bussen went to the grass coming in for a catch to protect the lead in the first game while Scott Mason in the second game reacted quickly to a hit with a rifle throw to second and a picked off runner - and then caught a well hit ball going away with a leap to end a potential rally. Rick turned several double plays at second. The hitting took time to get going. Joe Alda (3 runs) and Alex Grzybowski lead the way going 4 for 4 while John Hoylman and Aaron Bubb had 3 for 4 nights. Aaron and Alex had key RBI hits in the first game 5 run inning. John scored on a suicide "bunt" that took him on an extended trip in the home plate area. Dave Armstrong (2 runs) was on base 5 times with 3 walks and 2 hits. Scott Bussen (3 runs) had 3 hits including a home run that started the scoring in the second game and was into the same bushes in fair territory that continue into foul territory where Jeff Sapp hit his foul balls (Jeff - 2 runs - found fair territory with good hits in the second game as the team cheered) The 500 club was made up by Scott Mason and Bob Peschel. These were two well played games where all contributed. We appreciated the Fans who made the long trip to McCarty Park on the south side - some of whom joined 11 players who stopped at Sobelmans after the games.

Lincoln 4 The opposition for the evening - Grace Christ Fellowship I - were a second place team and played like they deserve to be there. The Bay Batters came back in the second game to lose 18-15 after losing the first game 18 - 5 when Joe Alba and Scott Bussen were the hitting bright spots. For the evening Joe Alba hit .800, the Pokey brothers each hit .600 while the .500 hitters were Jeff Sapp, Scott Bussen, Rick Wolniakowski and Tim Lathrop. Jason Pokey and Scott Mason had home runs in the second game. The outfield experienced a number of well hit balls going over their heads in the first game - for which adjustments by playing deeper and a short center fielder helped. But they were a good hitting team from top to bottom which also set up infield balls that required outstanding plays to make outs. All in all, the team played well.

Lincoln 4 The Bay Batters turned to coaches in order to complete the line ups as they won over New Hope II , 10-1 and 10-6. Home runs in the 4th inning of the first game by Jeff Sapp and Jason Pokey sparked a 9 run inning. Jeff Sapp also lead the offense with a 7/8 evening - plus 5 runs scored - while Rick Wolniakowski had 5/6. The bottom of the batting order was very productive as Bob Peschell and Coach Dick Steinmetz were 4/6 (4 and 3 runs respectively scored) . Bob Peschell was also responsible for 2 well pitched games with support from outstanding outfield caches by Aaron Bubb, Tim Lathrop (sun in his eyes) and Scott Mason . Scott assisted on 2 additional outs by "on line" throws to third and Coach Jim Lathrop at home - who made the tag. One memorable play in the infield involved Bob Peschell and Jason Pokey getting assists as the ground ball went through their legs for the play by Rick Wolniakowski.

Lincoln 3 The roster was lean again as the Bay Batters played the Wauwatosa Bible Chapel - with the number of avaialble players becoming fewer as the games went on. Dave Reeves stepped in to catch midway through the first game - providing good defense while getting on base twice and scoring. There was limited hitting in the first game which did not stop Aaron Bubb with 3 for 3 (4/6 total). In the end the team lost 7-5. The short time between games helped the hitters to find themselves as 12 runs were scored in the top of the first inning of the second game. The team almost batted around twice. Tim Lathrop lead the hitting in the second game with 4 for 4 (5 /6 for the evening) while Jeff Sapp and Dave Armstrong hit well for both games (4/6 and 4/7 respectively). The final score was 18-13. Dave Armstrong pitched the first and part of the seond game with Jason Pokey finishing up. The frustration for the pitchers was the number of walks granted by an undefined strike zone - which had both teams on edge.

Jackson

The first appearance by the Bay Batters Blue Team vs. Woodbridge came only after forfeit of the first game due to lack of players / confusion of game status. The second game, acting manager Scott Mason won the toss and took home bench. With a swampy infield and the looming Green Monster in the outfield, defense turned out to be challenging. Infielders Ricky and Tim were challenged by soft footing getting to get one out even with long stretches from Marty at first. In the outfield some surprising power went over center, even with jumping attemps (don't have the virtical I used to - SM). The offensive highlight that stuck out were consistanly long (and fair) power from Jeff Sapp into left with a HR, tripple, double.

I'm off to Scout Camp next week - check with Manager Dick Steinmetz for game status / location.

The positioning games with New Hope II were challenges for the Bay Batters who prevailed 7-6 and 8-2. Arron Bubb lead the hiting attpositioningack by driving in the first runs of each game while going 3/5 with 2 runs scored. Marty Wolniakowski (4/5) and Jeff Sapp (4/6 - 2 runs scored) were hitting bright lites while Bob Peschel (3/5 - 2 runs scored) demonstrated the art of right field hitting. The left side defense was challenged by the sun - Tim Lathrop making several difficult catches looking into that sun. Bob Peschel pitched 2 outstanding games to improve his record.

Lindsay 1

It all came together for the Bay Batters against Faith Bible 1 as the defense gave Bob Peschel all the support he needed to earn 2 victories - one of which was a most unusual shut out - 21 to 0. In that game, there were 3 double plays - each started by Joe Alba - turned by Rick Wolniakowski to Dave Bolyard - along with outstanding catches in the outfield by Scott Mason and Tim Lathrop. Dave Armstrong started a double play in the first game - turned by Rick. The defense play of the infield was remarkable given the water and mud on the back of the infield - turning Joe and Rick into "mudders" . The first game saw a come back from 9-3 with 10 runs in the bottom of the second inning. In that inning, Scott Mason homered while Jason Pokey and Joe Alba had triples among 8 hits as the team batted around (Marty Wolniakowski started this and one other inning in the second game when the team batted around). For the evening, Jason Pokey led the hitting with 6/8 (HR, 2 triples) followed closely by the pitcher Bob Peschel (5/7) who continued to give lessons on hitting to right. Alec Grzybowski (3/3 in the first game) and Neil Clerc had 4/6 along with Joe Alba (4/7), Scott Mason (5/9 - 6 runs scored), Tim Lathrop (4/8) and Dave Armstrong (4/8) - together making a major contribution to the hitting parade. The one downer was the injury to Jeff Sapp that took him out of the first game - and likely will prevent him from playing the next games before he moves to Rochester NY. So the team finished 4th in the league and moves on to the eliminiation tournament among the top 8 teams of the 14 team league.

The double elimination tournament began well for the Bay Batters against Brookside Baptist as they scored 3 runs in the first inning to take the lead. However, the bats then went quiet until the first inning of the second game against Harvest Community when they scored 8 runs. The offense for the evening was lead by Scott Mason with 6/6 including a home run in that first inning of the first game - plus 5 runs scored. Tim Lathrop and Dave Armstrong also had home runs (in the first inning of the second game) with Dave's being a grand slam. Joe Alba was the model lead-off hitter with 5/7 while Matt Pokey (4/6), Aaron Bubb (3/5) Dave Armstrong (4/7) and Scott Bussen (2/4) hit for the average. The defense played well against a fast Brookside team and better in the second game with several double plays. The pitching for the evening was turned over to Dave Armstrong who did a particularly good job. Now on to the 3 seed.

8.4 l 5 - 12 McCarty 1

The defense played well - holding a team that averages almost 19 runs a game to 12 runs - in good part to Bob's pitching.. Dave started an around the horn double play to Rick and Dave and Rick started a double play by catching a line drive and doubling the runner at first with a picture tag by Dave. Jim Lathrop tagged out a runner sliding at home with a perfect relay from Joe. Tim and Scott Bussen made great catches in the outfield. The only casualty for the evening was the destruction of Marty's glove as a well hit ball sliced through the webbing. Brother Rick had a second glove to finish the game.

The down side was that the offense which could not keep up with an good hitting team - only scored 4 runs. Tim and Dave Bolyard each had 3/3 and Joe had 2/3.
