Estabrook The Bay Batters played their first games of 2007 - having been elevated to the B Division - against Eastbrook. Pitching was the initial challenge as last year's pitching staff was not available. Matt Pokey yielded to his brother Jason Pokey's first stint ever on the mound in the first game as the team overcame a 7-1 deficit to tie - 11 - 11. John Hoylman saved the tie with a fine play at third base to get the last out. In the second game, a grand slam homer by Jason Pokey put the team ahead in the 3rd inning followed by 2 runs in the 5th - but Eastbrook rallied in the 7th to win 9-7. The offense was led by John Hoylman with a 5 for 6 nite plus Jason Pokey with 2 Hrs and 5 for 7. Jeff Sapp, Scott Bussen, and Jessie Beyer had .500 nites. The right side of the infield (Matt Pokey and Scott Bussen) played well on defense as did Arron Bubb in right field.

The Bay Batters met a good Div A team - New Hope I (they have 4 teams in the church) - which resulted in 17-1 and 19 - 6 losses. The offense started to improve as the second game went on - as did the defense (12 of the 19 runs being scored in the first 2 innings. ) Rick Wolniakowski played particularly good defense. The offense was lead by Jason Pokey (4 for 7) and John Hoylman (3 for 5) while John Fruncek batted 500 including a timely 2 run double with 2 outs in the 4th inning of the second game. The long ball was in the hands of Scott Mason with his home run. We knew this year would be a challenge by being moved up to the B Div after winning the C Div last year. The team needs to keep that challenge in mind as we have fun.

Estabrook The Bay Batters put it together in the second game 16-0 after losing the first game 4-0. The difference: Nine hits in game 1 and 24 hits in game 2 when many more were line drives. Everyone batted in the 11 run 5th inning. Individually, 6 players had 3 for 5 nites - namely the Pokey brothers, Dave Armstrong, John Hoylman, Aaron Bubb and Kyle Peschel - while John Fruncek continued to hit 500. The wind was a major factor in the first game with long fly balls being knocked down for outs - solved in the second game with line drives. The defense allowed only 4 runs in the first game and provided great support for Bob Peschel's shut out in the game 2. The infield in the second game played particluarly well with Kyle Peschel (communiting from exams in Madison) at third, Rick at short, Jason (with and without a glove) at second and Matt at first. Tim Lathrop - out of the hospital and back for the summer - joined the team.

The Bay Batters played well against the A Div Grace Christ Fellowship team - having leads in both games. The closeness of the scores reflects the good play. Steve Lyerly started the first game at pitcher and did well - which can take the load off Bob Peschel in the future. The offense was lead by Scott Mason with 4 for 5, a walk and 2 runs scored. Rick played part of the first game and was 3 for 4 while Jeff Sapp - nursing a leg muscle pull - had 4 for 6. The 500 club was occupied by Jason (3 runs scored) and Dave Armstrong. Waiting for John Hoylman was productive with his 2 for 2 upon arrival plus a nice play on a ground ball at 3rd base. In the outfield, Aaron, Scott and Dave Armstrong made outstanding plays - as did the infield with Jason turning a particularly nice double play.

Two for one as opponent team unable to field enough players. With a relaxed attitude and facing some nasty knuckle-balls, the Bay Batters bats were not too active.

McCarty 1 Even with locally heavy storms and lots of activity on Doppler radar, the field at McCarty was untouched. That said, the Bay Batters net result was two forfeits to the #1 division A team. Without on-site weather reports, the decision was made and it was based on the best information available.

Estabrook

The bats of the Bay Batters came alive for 10-2 and 11-3 wins over Eastbrook - although the defense and pitching had much to do with the solid victories. The result finds the team in first place for the B Div with a 5/8/1 record - as the A Div teams are having their way with the B Div. The expected (and somewhat long awaited) "coming out" of Bob Peschel arrived as Bob went 6 for 6 (including a Home Run) and pitched 2 good games. Other offense leaders included Neil Cleric and Scott bussen with 4 for 5 (each with a walk), Aaron Bubb with 4 for 6, Scott Mason with 3 for 5 plus Dave Armstrong with 3 for 6. The present standings in the B Div show the strength of the defense which was evident again in the 2 wins t - particularly play by Dave Armstrong at shortstop and outfield play by Scott Mason, Neil Cleric and Aaron Bubb.

W 25-2

W 19-14

Lincoln 3 The bats were alive as the Bay Batters won the first game 25-2 (9 runs in the first inning) and then met the challenge of Calvery Bible in the second game with a 19 - 14 win. The ball rolled once it got past the outfielders for 7 Bay Batter HRs (the scoring committee allowed for 7.5 HRs). Leading the hitting parade: Scott Mason and Dave Armstrong had 7 for 9 (1 HR each), Tim Lathrop had 6 for 8 (with some very timey hitting), the Peschel family had 12 for 17 while Ricky (2 HRs), Aaron and Steve were 5 for 8. Long ball honors went to Jason with 2.5 HRs in the second game while Jeff Sapp had to leave after a 2 for 2 nite. John Hoylman lifted his shoulder and hit 500. One high light from the first game was watching father Bob (from 1st) stay ahead of Kyle Peschel running out his HR. Fortunately, father Bob won. The pitching of Bob Peschel in the first game was outstanding with a number of foul outs resulting from well placed pitches. The defense was particularly good all nite with Calvery Bible hitting much better in the second game. Kyle Peschel closed down a late inning rally in the seoncd game with a diving catch - and the Hoylman to Wolniakowski to Lirely double play combination cut short another rally. Dave Armstrong looked great on both offense and defense in his new weight.

The defense was hot but a drought in hitting put the Bay Batters against the wall in the second game. The walk-on play of Jim Lathrop showed us young folks how its done - 7/4 at the plate and solid defense behind the plate. Solid pitching kept runners from scoring along with timely outs via double plays or heads-up plays with runners advancing. Dave Armstrong had little trouble getting on base batting 7-9 followed by Jeff and Bob (who says pitchers can't hit) with both 6 hits.

L 5-7

W 15-6

Estabrook It was the defense that shined in the second week renewal of games with Harvest Community Church. The Bay Batters lost the first game 7-5 after losing the lead to one long ball inning. The bats came alive in the second game with line drives and a 15-6 win. Dave Armstrong had 2 unassisted double plays after a spectacular turn by Rick Wolniakowski from John Hoylman to Steve Lierly (who was stretching well all nite). Bob Peschel's pitching was very effective (a number of foul outs) with Aaron Bubb behind the plate. Each of the outfielders made outstanding catches - Jason, Kyle (while sliding on the ground), Scott and Jeff. Offensively, 2 veterans returned (Jim Lathrop following his walk on last week) to lead the way - Jim coaching 3rd and Dave Bolyard going 5 for 6 with a key triple in the second game. Jason Polkey had 6 for 7, Rick and Jeff Sapp had 4 for 7 and John Hoylman was 3 for 6 . It looks like Bob Peschel is out of his one game batting slump. The scheduled season is over with the playoffs remaining.

L 10 - 8

W 12 - 1

McCarty Three veterans (Dave Bolyard, Jeff McClellan and Jim Lathrop) returned to McCarty Park so that the Bay Batters could field a team for the positioning games. The first game had 3 innings of warm up - after which the team came back - but lost 8-6. Steve Lirely was a last minute starter; and after a rough start, pitched well to hold Calvary Bible the last 3 innings. The momentum continued into the second game and a 12-1 victory. As a result, the Bay Batters finish the season with a 10-11-1 record - good enough to win the B Div. Everyone hit atleast 500 for the day. Bob Peschel pitched an outstanding second game and went 3/3 at the plate. Kyle Peschel (HR) and Scott Bussen (HR) each had 5/7 while Scott Mason (2HRs), Jeff Sapp and Tim Lathrop had 5/8. The defense was again outstanding (after warming up in the first game).

THANKS TO ALL OF YOU WHO PLAYED THIS YEAR - AND IT WAS A GOOD YEAR.

It is always difficult to end the year with an elimination tournament since only the final tournament winner goes home with a win. But the attached tournament summary for the "B Tournament" will allow you to relive the 2003 elimination tournament.

We just couldn't hit last nite - with the exception of the 2 veterans (Dave Bolyard - 2/2 and Jeff McClellan - 1/2) plus. Scott Bussen 3/4 and Kyle Peschel, Tim Lathrop and Aaron Bubb who each hit 500. The fielding was sometimes very good and sometimes not so good. But in the end, everyone had fun (I think) - helped by the stop at Sobelman's..

There was talk of next year after the games. Perhaps we can have the league recognize the significant age difference between our team and those in the A and B Div - although we were usually competitive with the B div teams. We just don't run as fast -for the most part. Anyway, the off season should allow time for healing - especially for Steve Lirely and Jim Lathrop.

Let me have any thoughts and comments for this year and/or the future.

Thanks again. See you in church

Dick
