left: THE WORLD building in New York City. Built in 1889 by Joseph Pulitzer, this 26 story structure was then the city’s tallest. George Brumder used this famous landmark as inspirati0n for his new Germania Building.

middle: The original design for Brumder’s Germania building by architects Schnetzky & Liebert. This rare watercolor shows the 10-story plan with central tower which was meant to resemble THE WORLD.

right: The earliest know photograph of the Germania Building taken a few years after it was built, by Milwaukee commercial photographer, Joseph W. Brown. Taken as a 8 x 10 glass plate negative, this rare view shows many features which subsequently disappeared; the statue of Germania, eagles at the roof line, wrought iron arc-light brackets at the 2nd floor level and the original sidewalk-level iron window grilles.
